Spring 1936. In the thick jungle of the South American continent, a renowned archeologist and expert on the occult is studying fragments of a map, when one of his exploration party pulls a gun. The archeologist pulls out a bullwhip and with such disarms the turncoat, sending him running - thus does Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones stay alive. He and a guide enter a dank and oppressively vast cave that contains several traps created by the ancient race which hid inside a famous handheld statue; Indy barely escapes such traps but is cornered by native tribesmen served by Belloq, an old enemy who arrogantly makes off with the statue, while Indy must flee for his life and escape on a friend's seaplane. Back in the US two agents from US Army intelligence tell him of Nazi German activities in archeology, including a gigantic excavation site in Egypt - a site that an intercepted cable indicates to Indy is the location of the Ark of the Covenant, the powerful chest bearing the Ten Commandments, that the Nazis can use to obliterate any enemy. Indy must recruit a former girlfriend (the daughter of his old professor) and an old chum in Cairo to infiltrate the Nazi site and make off with the Ark, but along the way Indy gets involved in a series of fights, chases, and traps, before the Nazis learn the full power of the Ark.

There are only so many films in history that I can watch again and again, gaining new appreciation for, one of them is this film. I went from the movies to VHS, and finally to DVD. The availability and quality of this film keep raising the bar of what I can get from it. I read someone posted that this is the king of B movies or something of that sort, while I honestly think in some scenes like when Indy is running from the Hovitos and he rises over the hill, the film had a really strange documentary feeling, like if a comic actually came to life and like in the Twilight Zone, you were stuck in it. It is great to see this film, now that I edit and produce small independent films, and have worked in post production in Los Angeles. I honestly think nearly every scene in this film is better than what's coming out today in sci-fi/adventure. I might pull back that comment in regards to some nice visuals in Riddick, and perhaps the new Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, but I'm not certain. The amount of time and effort put into the comedy, adventure, and depth of each character dazzles me because I really can't tell it was filmed the same year Fame was. It really has a unique look to it. The key lighting in the piece is amazing, almost everything looks like it was perfectly worked out. My only complaint is the attempt to visualize the opening of the Ark, as most of the other scenes don't deal with the supernatural except maybe a burning crate with a nazi symbol on it. George should redo that last scene in my opinion, and tighten it up, because I really think it wasn't coming together, however when I was a child it was so amazing and scary realistic. It's all perspective, but my point it that now in this modern filming era, the acting and film production is holding tight to this day. I forward you to just enjoy this film and look for things like formulas on chalkboards, skeletons in classrooms, proper patches on Nazi gear, gun accuracy. Research the film's era and background, and it only gets better. That's the ability that Spielberg and Lucas have, attention to detail and clever twists on most of their bodies of work. Watch this film again, it's worth it, I promise you.

Spielberg sure hit a home run with this one. Not only do I think it's the best of all the Indy movies (a title I doubt Indy IV will come to challenge), but it's also what I'd like to call the perfect adventure flick. Everything is simply top notch here: the acting, the directing, the story, the dialogue and last but not least, the brilliantly composed soundtrack by John Williams. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a full five stars, is the fact that the special effects are a bit dated by now. I still think I'd wanna keep them as they are though, because I'd hate to see these classics destroyed by George Lucas soulless urge to "re-master" them. Altough, with Spielberg still at the helm of things, I suppose we can allow ourselves to breathe a sigh of relief :-)

Great movie for every Harrison Ford fan! Indiana Jones: Raider of the Lost Ark is a wonderful movie for anyone who loves Harrison Ford, Spielberg and Adventure movies. Indiana Jones is sort of like the male version of Lara Croft except in 1936. I love the action and especially how Indiana Jones defies all those booby-traps to try to get to the Golden Idol and yet still doesn't get to keep it. I also like how creative Indiana Jones is to get out all sorts of messes! Luckily for the Nazi's he just won't die. It was so cool how the evil Nazi's used the monkey to try to get Indie and Marion. Everyhting about Indiana Jones is cool especially the graphics when the Ark of the Covenent is opened in the end. I think that I also found a blooper in the movie too. When the big German guy is beating up Indie and then get made to mince meat buy the plane blood splashes on the window to the little thing Marion is in and when Indie helps her out of the plane there is no blood on the window. I wonder is that was one of those little movie blooper. Anyways, this is a good movie and you shoudn't judge the new Indiana Jones on the whole series.

When you hear of a movie that was directed by George Lucas or Steven Spielberg, you know it's destined to be a classic right away. "Raiders of The Lost Ark" is certainly no exception. They couldn't have picked a better actor for the lead role of Indiana Jones than they did with Harrison Ford. If you haven't ever seen "Raiders of The Lost Ark" before, you got to see it. It has great special effects, action sequences, and best of all great acting. There's not many movies out there even today, that have more suspense and non-stop action like this movie has. This is the movie where the famous, huge boulder chases Indiana Jones out of the cave. But that is only one of the few parts of the movie that you will never forget. Join Dr. Jones on this edge of the seat adventure while he tries to find and secure the Lost Ark. NOTE: That was my Amazon review from the year 2000. I'd say this is the second best IJ movie of all time behind Temple of Doom. Both true classics.
